The journey of creating the smart target

- Humble Start
In 2022, we began our journey by designing and selling protective gear cases, specializing in a variety of rifle and tactical pistol cases. Through our dedication to quality and innovation, we quickly rose to become top sellers on Amazon, distinguishing ourselves amidst numerous competitors.
- Innovation is our DNA - LEGO Alike Reconfigurable Foam Insert
We quickly learned that our customers often need to customize their rifle setups, requiring separate foam inserts. However, these inserts are as large as the cases themselves, making it costly to sell them separately due to high shipping expenses.
Inspired by LEGO, our team designed a modular foam insert system that allows customers to reconfigure it infinitely based on their needs.
- The idea of creating a Smart Target with GBB emerges
- How can we train daily at home? Driven by our passion for Airsoft and tactical training, we recognized the need to develop a smart target system. This allows us to set up a home "range" for daily training with various drills, while also recording and analyzing performance data.
- What are the right technology? We rolled up our sleeves and dove into the prototyping phase. We discovered that infra touch screen technology was too slow and lacked the granularity to detect small, fast-moving BBs traveling at 170m/s. Additionally, pressure touch screens proved too fragile, failing to withstand impacts; either the glass shattered or the embedded circuitry was damaged.
- Found a feasible technology but more problems comes Finally, we discovered a novel technology that utilizes microphones to calculate the differences in sound travel times from the hit point to different mics, enabling precise position calculation. While the theory sounded feasible, the challenges we faced were so daunting that they nearly caused the team to consider abandoning the project.
- Just not accurate enough Despite our efforts to improve hardware design and software algorithms, our smart target system did not achieve the accuracy and precision we expected. We encountered various challenges including issues with screen material durability, microphone precision and consistency, and hardware signaling processing defects. Through meticulous troubleshooting, we addressed each issue step by step and reached a point that met our own standards of acceptability.
- Just not fast enough After receiving heartbreaking feedback from competition shooters regarding the precision and speed of our smart target system, we refused to give up. We recognized the need to design a tool capable of rapidly shooting the target in different positions, crucial for testing and calibration. The complexity of this tool even surpassed that of the target itself. Despite the challenges, we successfully developed and implemented the tool, enabling us to not only test the target effectively but also calibrate our devices to achieve our goals in both speed and precision.
- The software is not cool We faced additional challenges with the mobile app and software inside the target, but despite this, we persevered.
- The Best Rewards
Today, I'm proud to announce that we've achieved a milestone: our smart target now leads the industry, supporting shots as fast as 0.01 seconds with precision less than 1mm.
